Advocacy

In accordance with the goals of the Foundation for the European Representation of Hungarian National Communities, created by parties represented in the parliament of Hungary, our mission is to represent and affirm in the European arena, to the best of our ability and in cooperation with the communities concerned, the interests of Hungarian communities abroad. Accordingly, we will keep actors of diplomatic and political life in Brussels as well as employees of EU institutions informed of the conditions, plans, and objectives of autochthonous Hungarian communities and perform advocacy activities in the best interest of those communities.

The European Citizens’ Initiative

The European Citizens’ Initiative is a unique way for you to help shape the EU. Once an initiative has reached 1 million signatures, the Commission will decide on what action to take. As of 1 April 2012, EU citizens have a new tool allowing them to participate in shaping EU policy. Put in place by the Lisbon Treaty, the citizens’ initiative allows 1 million citizens from at least a quarter of the EU Member States to ask the European Commission to propose legislation.

Programmes

HUNINEU will engage in various activities ranging from cultural diplomacy to lobbying. We seek to present the work of artists from various segments of the Hungarian nation; provide an opportunity to get to know facets of Hungarian culture; at the same time, we seize every opportunity to bring to the attention of decision makers the problems of autochthonous Hungarian communities abroad, and the proposals for potential solutions. Independently or conjointly with others, we undertake the organization of events which may call attention to the difficulties of Hungarian communities beyond Hungary’s borders in maintaining their identity.

THE HUNINEU OFFICE

The Foundation for the European Representation of Hungarian National Communities is an organization created by parties represented in the parliament of Hungary for the purpose of adequately informing the European public and EU institutions of the conditions, plans, and objectives of Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin. The Foundation also works to promote the interests of Hungarian communities abroad. To effectively implement these objectives, the Foundation has, according to the resolution made on 14 September 2007 of the Forum of Hungarian Representatives in the Carpathian Basin (KMKF), the parliamentary dimension of the Hungarian national policy, established the Brussels Office for the European Representation of Hungarian National Communities (hereinafter referred to as HUNINEU Office).

The main decision-making body and manager of the Foundation’s assets is the Board of Trustees, chaired at all times by the Speaker of the National Assembly, that is currently Mr. Speaker László Kövér.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors is seated in Budapest, and assists the continuous operation of the Foundation, the HUNINEU Office and the work of the Board of Trustees.

The tasks which serve the Foundation’s purposes will mainly be carried out through the HUNINEU Office. Through the establishment of the HUNINEU Office, the Foundation has created an organization which has the means to provide European Union institutions as well as actors on the diplomatic scene surrounding those institutions with up to date information on the conditions of Hungarian communities, their aspirations, and Hungarian national policy developments. The Foundation also seeks to reinforce the representation of interests by means of various events to be organized in Brussels, Strasbourg and various Hungarian national communities. Also, it informs the Hungarian institutions and ethnic Hungarian organizations dealing with minority issues of ongoing developments in EU institutions that directly or indirectly affect the situation of Hungarian national policy and may determine national policy directions. To this end, the main duties of the office include information, orientation, the presentation of Hungarian minorities abroad, organization, and communication. The Office will report on its activities to the Foundation which oversees its operations, and through it, to the KMKF, the initiator of the Office’s establishment. The duties of the Brussels HUNINEU Office are currently performed by Annamária Schnörch, who is on the Office staff.
